'Ngāti Kāpo' was conceived at a gathering of kāpo Māori and their whānau in 1983. Hui participants believed that their cultural identity and right to determine their own destinies as Māori blind was being undermined.

From this hui came the establishment of a regional ropu (support group) and subsequent ropu whose purpose was and remains today to provide mutual support, advocacy and a forum in which to discuss and develop strategies that will diminish the societal issues and barriers that prevent kāpo Māori and their whānau to reach their own individual potential.

By the end of 1990 support for 'Ngāti Kāpo' had rapidly grown nationally and lead to the organization registering as a legal entity 'Ngāti Kāpo Aotearoa Inc.' in March 1991 under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. The legal name of the society was further amended to read 'Ngāti Kāpo o Aotearoa Inc.' in March 2002.

Of significance is that since its inception in 1983 the vision, mission, and underlying principles of Ngāti Kāpo remain relative to the aspirations of the founding members.

Ngāti Kāpo O Aotearoa Inc. is globally recognized, valued and supported by all stakeholders as the core element in promoting and facilitating the aspirations of Ngāti Kāpo members' in accordance with the Society's 'Key Statements'.
