Te Puni Kokiri is the New Zealand Government's principal adviser on the Crown's relationship with iwi, hapu and Maori, and on key Government policies.  
The Ministry of Māori Development Act 1991 established Te Puni Kōkiri, the Ministry of Māori Development in 1992.  Te Puni Kōkiri’s broad functions, enabled through the Ministry of Māori Development Act 1991, are:

  • promoting increases in levels of achievement attained by Māori with respect to education, training and employment, health and economic resource development; and,
  • monitoring and liaising with each department and agency that provides, or has a responsibility to provide, services to or for Māori, for the purpose of ensuring the adequacy of those services.

Currently, Te Puni Kōkiri’s work focuses on providing high quality policy advice to Government and other agencies. Recently it has also begun providing services to assist Māori achieve their development aims.
